| Cheerfulness ~ The Gift of Sunlight
|
|
|
Spring is approaching and with it more warmth and sunlight. I wound down the windows of my car to let the cool breeze surround me, and the warm sun energized me as I soaked it in. I felt cheerful and happy as I allowed my senses to absorb the wonder of my beautiful surroundings. Yet we are constantly warned to keep out of the sun. Sunlight is a Natural Energy Booster. Did you know that people are chemically prone to depression if they don't get enough sunlight? We have two amazing chemicals that balance our moods - serotonin, the happy chemical, and melatonin for healthy sleep. The intricate balance between them determines the degree to which we remain cheerful during the day, and the amount of restful sleep we get at night. Serotonin levels go up after laughter, which also produces endorphins. Both aid the immune system, so make us less prone to disease. |
||
Melatonin is produced
by the pineal gland when the sun goes down. When the sun comes up,
melatonin production ceases and serotonin is released. Artificially producing melatonin and serotonin can affect the delicate balance between these two magical chemicals and, as often happens when man meddles with Nature, side effects can occur, ranging from annoying to very severe. Read

SAD stands for 'Seasonal Affective Disorder', which means a state of depression caused by living, working or studying in low light conditions for long periods of time and not getting enough natural light and sun. SAD also occurs in countries with short winter days. A friend who comes from Holland told me that, when she was a child, her mother gave her a daily dose of Cod Liver Oil in every month of the year that had an 'r' in its name. This meant no fish oil in May, June, July and August, which were the summer months. Why did my friend's wise mother do this? Because in the summer there was sufficient light for the body to produce serotonin and other essentials such as Vitamin D. Now we can buy Omega
3 (Fish Oil) supplements, which not only help us to remain cheerful,
but also aid the immune system, the cardiovascular system and nourish
the brain. Omega 3 fatty acids are even said to enhance memory. |

| Do you hide from the sun? Have you bought the line about 'the harmful rays of the sun". Just think what image this conjures up - being zapped by a ray gun! Yet studies have now proven that rather than sunlight causing cancer, the opposite is true. Cancer rates are much lower where there is more sunlight. But like my mother used to say: 'Everything in moderation'. Too much sun, and particularly sun burn can cause melanomas. People who have constant exposure to the sun are less likely to develop melanoma than urbanized people who have intermittent exposure. When my children were babies, we were told to give them a 'sun bath' of up to ten minutes per day. The practice of sun baths went a long way to almost eliminating rickets, the serious bone disease of children, now on the increase again in some countries. |

| Vitamin D is necessary for a healthy immune system. It helps control appetite and body weight, contributes to fertility and healthy bones and prevents a range of dis-eases. Vitamin D deficiency can result in diabetes, muscle weakness causing falls, schizophrenia, MS, high blood pressure, heart failure and cardiovascular disease, many forms of cancer, psoriasis, infections, osteoporosis, rickets and dental decay. On a lighter note...... |

| Laughter keeps you young. If George Sholin is an example, then it works. He was an 89 year old student in 2004 with two batchelor degrees and a masters degree, working part time for the California Energy Commission - hence his 'Energy' puns:

What
words are you using?
No matter what the circumstances you can energize yourself if you use the right words. Be like my friend who has been saying to herself for years, "I'm happy, healthy and well". Despite many challenges with family, finances and more, she comes up smiling and energizes others as well as herself. |
