Motion
- a Natural Energy Booster
|
|
|
Motion
is Energy, and Energy creates Motion.
‘From birth to death we never stop moving…. Motion, that’s what the body is all about.’ Pete Egoscue, author of '‘The Egoscue Method of Health Through Motion’. As long as we are alive we are perpetual motion machines, and the way to keep these motion machines healthy is to move as much as we can. Movement is a Natural Energy Booster in more ways than one. |
||
| The baby emerges at birth with arms and legs flailing. Her emotions, whether she is crying or laughing, move her entire body, from her face muscles to the tips of her toes. She exercises even before
she can sit up, crawl or walk, by wriggling like a little worm to
get from one end of the crib to the other, and she uses her facial
expressions, vocal chords and body as an 'attractor factor' to capture
the attention of the adults who serve her. |

If we imitate the baby by keeping in motion we will continue to be energized and to create healthy cells in all the many systems of our bodies. The systems are: circulatory, digestive, endocrine, immune, integumentary (skin, hair and nails), lymphatic, muscular, nervous, reproductive, respiratory, skeletal and urinary. |
||
| All systems are dependant on movement to stay healthy, but some are more dependent on motion than others; the lymphatic system for instance. Anthony Robbins talks about the importance of deep breathing and exercise daily to pump the lymph throughout the body. He says, 'You must understand the power of breath. ... Your breath is the control button to the mechanism that cleanses your circulatory system.’ Deep
breathing and movement keep the lymph flowing through our bodies,
and the lymphatic system is vital to our continued good health and
energy. Children are ingenious at making movement easy and fun. As well as exploring their own ability to move from place to place, a child will grab every opportunity to ride on something - particularly another human being. |
||
| When my children were babies I carried them on my back in a baby sling - they loved it. Have you ever given a child a 'Horsey ride' on your leg, or on all fours on your back? Have you piggy-backed, or hoisted a child onto your shoulders? Have you pushed a child on a swing, or a kiddy car? As they grow older children learn to propel themselves with tricycles, bikes, skate boards billy carts, and scooters. The list goes on. Then there's animals to ride - the family dog (if it's big enough) and horses. What is it about riding on things that is so attractive? |

Perhaps it is speed and the element of danger that makes it exciting and energizing. Even learning to ride a bike brings with it the threat of falling off and grazing a leg or breaking a tooth. And what can be more exhilarating than flying down the road on a go-kart or motor-bike? My oldest son and his oldest son are Motocross fanatics, and are up in the top four in their district competitions. They have had many spills, and even broken bones, but they keep going back for the thrill of the ride. (Read about the Motorbiking Musketeers)

||
The number of ways humans can ride is infinite. There's all manner of water vehicles - on the surface, under-water, and over the water with parasailing. There's innumerable ways to take to the air, and even into space. Then there's fun rides in theme parks - eveything from the gentle merry-go-round to the Claw, or the Tower of Terror. |

|
| I have flown in a glider, mustering helicopter, a gyrocoptor and a balloon - each time trying to capture the feeling of flying like a bird. There's something special about being able to look down on the earth far below without walls to encase you. But these are relatively passive ways to take a ride. Many rides are not passive. Often the act of staying on the ride, and manipulating it to go faster or slower will exercise muscles in the body that are not used in day-to-day movement. The chemicals that are released, adrenalin and serotonin, give a feeling of exhilaration and energy. I used to ride horses. I knew I was using muscles because made their presence felt after the ride. It was a total body workout, and the feeling of excitement and awareness that comes with galloping down the track is something I can still visualise. |

|
| Not only will moving and taking rides enhance your body's chemistry, but it will expand your view of the world, heighten your awareness of what is around you, put you in touch with the natural elements at a faster pace, and improve your brain function by increasing your reaction time. Exciting movement stimulates adrenalin, the chemical of heightened awareness – the ‘fight or flight’ chemical, and serotonin, the happy chemical. These are the body’s Natural Energy Boosters. But be aware that too much adrenalin and its mate cortisol are not good for the immune system. Movement is one of the key Natural Energy Boosters we can tap into to keep us happy, healthy and strong. The benefits are:
So if you want to
become energized, get into action. Move - walk, run, exercise. If
you want to increase your joy of life and energy, rise to the challenge
and find something to ride.

| The lymphatic system is the body's garbage collector, the internal vacuum cleaner sucking up metabolic garbage, toxins and excess fluid from every organ. If the flow of lymph is impaired it becomes thick and toxic and can become a breeding ground for infection. When this fluid enters the bloodstream, as is part of the normal process, infection can spread to any organ or part of the body. The lymphatic system has no pump like the heart, so it depends upon muscle contraction to circulate to the cells. If the lymph becomes sluggish or stops flowing, the body's sewerage system backs up, it becomes a breeding ground for viruses, bacteria and parasites - disease sets in and we become ill or even die. We must move, in order to keep lymph flowing through our bodies. |

| Being in the company of children is energizing. Recently I was invited to present some ideas on Creative Writing to Year 6 and 7 students at a school here on the Gold Coast. What a privilege to be in the company of these energetic youngsters, who were so interested in what I had to share with them. Not only did I absorb the youthful energy in the room, but I was also energized by the thought that I might have inspired them in some way to go on to be writers themselves - the CS Lewis's or JK Rowlings of the future. Two more Natural Energy Boosters:
